This is Photojournalist Fred G. Haseney with his eye on scientology. On May 14, 2016, outside an event for the 66th anniversary of dianetics, we conducted a protest at the Pacific Area Command Base (“PAC Base” or “Big Blue”), the so-called “church” of scientology’s West Coast headquarters. Former scientologists Tory Christman, Cece Marie Gangle Smith, Lynn Fountain Campbell, and others joined us to demonstrate. We held a quiet protest. We brought to PAC Base a message of love from Phil and Willie Jones to their children, and to everyone affected by scientology’s toxic practice of “disconnection”: “To my loved one in scientology… call me.”
In today’s blog, I’ve interspersed quotes from scientology’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard (“LRH”), and his very own “Executive Directives.” LRH EDs were directives issued by him, sent to staff or specific posts (jobs) in their organizations (“orgs”). They were blue ink on white paper with a special heading.
“It is interesting that ‘Life’ Magazine in the U.S. has been a violent foe of Dianetics and Scientology for 18 years… The Intelligence, espionage pattern is very plain here… The standard propaganda line is… Scientology breaks up families.” —L. Ron Hubbard (LRH ED 63 WW 6 US, “Amnesty and Suppressive Groups,” June 29, 1968.) [LRH released that ED to staff only; not for public issue.]
Photo Caption: Some of us drove around PAC Base with magnetic “call me” signs affixed to the driver’s and passenger’s car doors. I call those protests “drive-bys.” Those of us on foot did “walk-bys,” in which we carried “call me” signs with a corrugated back. For this event, I hooked a sign around my next so I could carry it about waist-high. That way, I had my hands free for picture taking. For this photo, we arrived at the horseshoe entrance to PAC Base on Catalina St. After I got out of Lynne’s car, I hung the sign around my neck and stood on the street, from which I took this picture of a group of Sea Org (“SO”) members. To the right are two SO Security Guards (“SG”) who are about to go into action and spirit this group away from me. In that group of people, notice the girl on the right looking in my direction; she’s obviously aware of the proceedings.
“To start the New Year Right, AD19 begins with Tech getting in-in-in over the world, stats going up, celebrities coming in… and staffs everywhere on the ball… We’re in better shape than ever.” —L. Ron Hubbard (LRH ED 75 INT, “Good News,” circa 1969.)
Photo Caption: One SG walks north along Catalina St. as the other walks casually toward the entrance to the building. Their movements may appear casual, but I suspect they’ve been drilled as to what to do under such circumstances. The group of SO members continues their muster (meeting).
“…we totally dominate the technology of the mind…” —L. Ron Hubbard (LRH ED 69 INT, “Western Countries,” circa 1969.)
Photo Caption: With precision, the SG to the right quietly signals for the group to leave the area. Notice that two or more people in the group have turned their heads in the direction of that guard; all of them appear to be on the same page.
Photo Caption: The group of SO members immediately leaves the area.
“Our progress is proportional to the number of good Scientologists we make.” —L. Ron Hubbard (LRH ED 4 INT, “Summary of LRH ED’s Since September 1, 1967, World Wide,” May 29, 1968.)
Photo Caption: Soon, we would be told by police to leave the north side of Fountain Avenue. But, before that happened, we were able to protest right in front of the Main Building, a path many SO members traveled to an event entrance where Fountain Ave. meet L. Ron Hubbard Way (“LRH Way”). Here, I stand with the “call me” sign hanging from my neck, camera in hand, welcoming a group of four SO women. Notice the girl second from the left, because she’s just spotted the sign. It appears as if she has read it and is digesting its message. Each woman carries what may be a cup of coffee. The three women on the left have belt buckles that show the “Sea Org” symbol.
Photo Caption: At this point, the women seem happy and carefree, yet may also be wondering what they should do. Should they proceed or go back into the building and find a different route?
Photo Caption: For a moment, they turn as if to go back into the Main Bldg.
Photo Caption: They’ve decided to continue with the original game plan. Perhaps they’ve decided to make believe I’m not there, but the girl on the right can’t help but glance my way.
Photo Caption: In this photo, the girl on the right appears to have read the sign again. As the message sinks in, she sips from her cup.
Photo Caption: For this shot, I’m on Catalina St., looking at the east entrance to Lebanon Hall (“LH”). (I lived on its fourth floor when I served scientology as a Sea Org member in 1977-1978 and later, after accepting an amnesty, from 1980-1981). Notice the steps; the sidewalk leads to Catalina St. SO members use this location as a smoking area. Three SO members lounge on the stairway; the door to LH is behind the person on the left. Everything looks calm and carefree; soon, however, security will lockdown the east door of LH.
“IF WE DO NOT SUCCEED THIS PLANET WON’T BE WORTH DUST!” —L. Ron Hubbard (LRH ED 62 INT, “Scarcity of Trained Auditors,” December 8, 1968.)
Photo Caption: After exiting LH, SO members take the sidewalk to Catalina St. Notice the guy on the left and the guy on the right. They’ve read your message, Phil and Willie; they hear what you’re saying. The guy on the right looks very interested in its message.
Photo Caption: For this composite, I’ve cropped and zoomed in on the two SO members in the last photo as they read the sign.
Photo Caption: Lockdown at Lebanon Hall! A SG ensures the security of the area. No one in, no one out.
Photo Caption: The last people to leave LH were spirited away by security into the shipping and receiving area of PAC Base, just a few feet away from LH and the sidewalk to Catalina St. For this photo, I stand at the closed gate to the loading area and zoom in on those SO members as they take a break and enjoy water or a cigarette. There’s a gap in the gate; this photo gives the illusion of prison bars.
Photo Caption: More Sea Org members are going to be stirred from their slumber in scientology’s bubble world by the fact that we’re protesting the dianetics event (and scientology in general). Further up Catalina St. is a driveway into the parking lot behind the Los Angeles Organization (“LA Org”) and the American Saint Hill Organization (“ASHO”). For this photo, I’m standing at the entrance to that driveway with a welcome from Phil and Willie.
Photo Caption: Who are these people? this SO member must be wondering. What’s that sign? What should I do? Should I call security? “We come in peace,” I said to more than one such SO member.
Photo Caption: Okay, so imagine for a moment that you are a scientologist, a Sea Org member, living in their bubble world. You’re walking north along Catalina St., on your way to an event, and you see…
Photo Caption: … this! Actually, for this photo, four demonstrators posed for a security camera that’s barely visible in the upper-left hand corner.
“The Sea Org is a roaring success.” —L. Ron Hubbard (LRH ED 120 AO 860 INT, “World Scientology Influence,” February 7, 1968.) [“AO” means “Advanced Org”]
Photo Caption: Our days of demonstrating along the sidewalk on the north side of Fountain Avenue are numbered (for today, at least). In this picture, we see scientology’s cavalry arrive in the form of Sea Org member extraordinaire, Ken Long. The last time I saw Ken, I surreptitiously followed him (Scientology After Going Clear—Los Angeles Field Operations—May 30, 2015). As he is associated with the Office of Special Affairs (“OSA”), Ken came out of the Main Bldg. with both guns drawn, so-to-speak. He may be thinking, These demonstrators are not going to disrupt MY evening!
Photo Caption: As Ken descends the front steps from the Main Bldg., he gets a good look at me and the “call me” sign.
Photo Caption: Ken and another SO member retrieve a couple of orange and white sidewalk blockades from LRH Way and take them to the corner of Catalina St. and Fountain Ave. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is going to ruin scientology’s party! It’s clear that Ken. and Co. have done this drill before.
Photo Caption: “Sidewalk Closed.” Police informed the protesters to stay off the sidewalk along the north side of Fountain Ave., between Catalina and LRH Way. Soon, the north side of that sidewalk would be off-limits from LRH Way east, one block, to New Hampshire Ave. The yellow tape is marked (in English and Spanish): “Los Angeles Police Department—Do Not Cross.”
“Get your finger off the panic button.” —L. Ron Hubbard (LRH ED 32 WW 19 SH, August 1, 1968.) [“WW” means “Worldwide”; “SH” means “Saint Hill”]
Photo Caption: For this photo, I’ve zoomed in on a sign on one of those sidewalk blockades. The sign reads: “Sidewalk Closed Saturday. Open to Residents.” The only residents allowed were scientologists, because non-scientologists do not live along this stretch of Fountain Ave.
“We’re going to take over… the whole field of mental healing.” —L. Ron Hubbard (LRH ED 62 INT, “Stability,” November 24, 1968.)
Photo Caption: Since the protesters and demonstrators took pictures and video of scientologists, scientlogists felt obliged to do the same. Here, a SO member, perhaps an OSA staff member, adjusts his camera.
Photo Caption: Police protection is heavy at PAC Base during the dianetics event, as is evidenced by this motorcycle policeman driving north along Catalina St. He waved and smiled at me when I did the same for him. On the right are three SO members walking south on the sidewalk; they’ve just turned onto Catalina St. from the driveway in back of LA Org and ASHO. A SO SG patrols the area in front of them.
“Don’t feel too bad about any press or publicity or ‘bad news’.” —L. Ron Hubbard (LRH ED 42 INT, “Press Stories,” November 4, 1968.)
Photo Caption: With all of this security and police prescence at the corner of LRH Way and Sunset Blvd., I’m surprised scientology didn’t ask the governor to call out the National Guard.
Photo Caption: The motorcycle policeman has a nice smile. The guy behind him looks indifferent; the SG straddling his bicycle appears to wish that he could be anywhere but here.
“There are 3 billion PCs (“Pre-Clears”) here, even more. We need 300,000,000 auditors to handle them. Well, let’s get on with it. What are we waiting for.” —L. Ron Hubbard (LRH ED 4 INT, “Summary of LRH ED’s Since September 1, 1967, World Wide,” May 29, 1968.)
Photo Caption: PAC Base security has their own dog. For this photo, he’s being taken for an eagerly-awaited walk.
